Best Director- Brillante Mendoza

A Filipino won as Best Director at Cannes Film Festival. Brillante Mendoza won the award for his movie “Kinatay” which means massacre in English.  It’s a very gorey movie where a cop hacked a prostitute with a kitchen knife. It may remind you of a chop-chop lady but this is even worse because the victim is still alive when she was being sliced to pieces. Dark, huh?

The movie evolves around the life of a policeman for one day. In the beginning, the policeman got married then later on he went out with his colleagues that are corrupt policement. There they played with a prostitute. They raped and tortured her then eventually killed her like an animal before disposing her around Manila.

The movie received both positive and negative reviews but Brillante Mendoza was considered brilliant which is why he had won the award. Last year his piece didn’t win but it made a mark as the first movie that ever competed in the top prize after 14 years.
