Food prices have always been a constant national issue. For the past decade, prices of these goods have hiked repeatedly, causing dilemma for average citizens and mostly to those who belong to the less-fortunate class. The government has carried out programs to lessen the burdens of the people; however, we all go back to the same scenario over and over again. The issue on food prices should be given an ultimate solution to somehow lessen the people’s lined up struggles.
The issue on food prices is taken seriously by one of the most competent presidential candidate for the upcoming May 10 elections. As part of his solid platform of government, Gilbert Teodoro Jr. addressed several issues on food prices to provide a clear understanding on how the government should deal with this matter.
According to the former Secretary of Defence, there is a call for to agriculture financial support because it is a strategic part in controlling food prices.
Lakas Kampi CMD presidential bet Gibo Teodoro dealt with the issue of elevating food prices in the country, speaking before the 90 members of the Wallace Business Club during the presidential forum held at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel in Makati City.
“There is already an increase in ASEAN food prices to the tune of about 10% in the first quarter of the year, and the Philippines is not exempt from that,” he said.
He also stated that this can only indicate supplementary fundings from the government to support “the poorest of the poor, and agriculture, which is a strategic sector.”
“With how El Niño and Ondoy affected agriculture, there’s no way for the government to go without subsidizing farmers,” said Gibo. “There’s no way you can let these farmers, who are already in debt, go hungry.”
According to Teodoro, a different way to deal with the rising food prices is to modify the agriculture sector, those producing subsistence crops such as rice and corn in particular. Farmers can generate great volumes of products which, in turn, will lower prices with modernization and technology.
Finally, the presidential candidat expressed his desire to help farmers. According to Gibo, farmers will be given special treatment under a Teodoro administration.
